Two Green party leadership candidates had anti-Semitic, racist and sexist remarks made to them during an online town hall last week.

One of the candidates, Annamie Paul, from Toronto, said the party needs to be more pro-active in stamping out discrimination.

Paul said in a tweet that the online town hall was interrupted by people using anti-Semitic, racist and sexist language.

“As a Black Jewish candidate, I’ve been subject to months of anti-Semitic & racist attacks,” said Paul in the tweet.

“Party silence emboldened hate. It ends when I win.”

Paul said in an interview that she was troubled by the hateful comments.

“I was taken aback,” she said. “These are things that I’ve seen before, but you never really become accustomed to it. It’s always jarring.”

Paul said the Green party emboldened hate by making general statements about anti-discrimination. She said the party could do better when it comes to anti-discrimination by calling it out and sanctioning people.
